Smart Metering

Driven by the global requirement to reduce energy consumption, use energy more efficiently and utilise cleaner sources of energy, there are real benefits to be had from the introduction of new technology into electricity, gas, water and heat metering systems.

The energy industry is preparing to install a new generation of smart meters in homes and business premises. These will be capable of communicating with domestic or business appliances, with energy providers, and also with other meters. This integrated system approach will enable energy consumption to be managed according to the availability of cheaper cleaner energy.

Energy meter development
Cambridge Consultants has been developing electricity, gas, water and heat meters for over 20 years. We have a deep understanding of the industry and its requirements, and we have the knowledge and skills required to develop the new generation of smart meters. Key technologies at our disposal include low cost and ultra-low power electronics together with a system engineering approach that protects investment and enables future development.

Home automation
The connected or automated home will be an important part of the energy equation. In the future, white goods, appliances, heating and air conditioning will communicate with smart meters to take advantage of cheap clean energy. These communications will use wired or wireless networks to metering gateways and they must be secure and reliable. Communications from the gateway back to the energy provider will automate the meter reading and billing process.

UMI™ (Universal metering Interface)

UMI™ is a universal metering interface developed by Cambridge Consultants, which is proposed as a standard to the metering and home automation industries. Both meter providers and home automation OEMs can adopt UMI™ to provide compatibility and protect their investment.
